# Round 1 buys a 63% shot. Day 3 buys 6%.

Rookie wide receivers are where scouting confidence and fantasy optimism tend to outrun the denominator. The misses disappear. The exceptions become templates. We started with the denominator instead: **every wide receiver drafted from 2010–2022**, including players who never recorded an NFL fantasy point.

Our primary “hit” was declared before analysis: at least one top-36 PPR finish by the end of Year 3. Among 51 first-round receivers, **62.7% hit** (95% Wilson interval: 49.0%–74.7%). Among 240 players selected in Rounds 4–7, **5.8% hit** (3.5%–9.6%).

## The curve, round by round

Round 2 produced a top-36 season by Year 3 for **38.1%** of receivers. Round 3 fell to **25.9%**. Rounds 4 and 5 sat near 12%; Round 6 produced one hit in 67 selections, and Round 7 produced none in this cohort.

Those last estimates are not laws. Their uncertainty is visible, and another cohort will produce different outliers. But the overall decline is not a rounding artifact. In a pick-level logistic model, every 32 selections later multiplied the odds of a top-36 hit by **0.49** (95% CI: 0.41–0.58). That is an odds ratio, not a fixed change in probability.

## We locked the goalposts before looking

Any hit-rate article can manufacture its conclusion by changing “hit.” So the primary threshold is accompanied by two harder ones. By Year 3, **52.9%** of first-round receivers had a top-24 finish and **31.4%** had a top-12 finish. For Day 3 receivers, those rates were **2.9%** and **1.2%**.

The exact rate changes with the threshold. The ordering does not.

## What draft capital is measuring

Draft capital is not a pure talent variable. It bundles team evaluation, athletic and production evidence, contract commitment, roster patience, and the opportunity a team is likely to create. That makes it useful for prediction and dangerous for causal storytelling.

The right fantasy interpretation is Bayesian: draft round sets the prior. Age, early declaration, college production, competition, landing spot, and price can update it. They should have to do real work to erase it.

## The draft-room rule

Do not use a memorable Day 3 success to price the entire Day 3 class. At the same time, do not treat a first-round receiver as safe: roughly **37%** of this cohort never delivered even one top-36 season in the first three years.

Use the base rate as a tiebreaker and a burden of proof. The later the draft capital, the stronger the player-specific evidence — and the cheaper the acquisition price — should need to be.

## Where this can break

Top-36 PPR is a fantasy-utility threshold, not a universal definition of NFL success. Injuries, quarterbacks, depth charts, and coaching are part of the outcome rather than controlled causes. Undrafted free agents are outside this estimand. And because the public player-stat snapshot ends with 2024, the study stops at the 2022 draft class so every player receives the same three-season window.

## Reproducibility and provenance

The run stores both SHA-256 hashes, the complete drafted-player cohort, all 1236 player-season windows, rank calculations, uncertainty intervals, reviewer findings, and the publication decision.
