NFL Passing Efficiency and Scoring at 15+ MPH Wind

In 1,323 outdoor and open-roof regular-season games, windy conditions came with less neutral passing, worse accuracy, and lower efficiency — but the evidence stops short of a pregame forecast tool.

KEY FINDING

At the registered 15 mph threshold, outdoor NFL games showed meaningfully less passing and scoring: neutral early-down dropback rate fell 1.8 points, completion rate fell 2.3 points, pass EPA per dropback dropped 0.067, and combined points fell 3.8 versus games below 10 mph.

Wind gets blamed for a lot of bad fantasy weeks, and the data mostly backs that up — once it reaches 15 mph. Across 1,323 weather-complete outdoor and open-roof NFL regular-season games from 2018 through 2025, games reported at 15 mph or higher averaged 42.3 combined points versus 46.1 in games below 10 mph, a drop of 3.8 points with a 95% interval from -6.2 to -1.3. The passing game thins out too: completion rate fell from 60.3% to 58.0%, and pass EPA per dropback slid from +0.056 to -0.011.

What changes at 15 mph

The study compared games at or above the preregistered 15 mph threshold against games below 10 mph. Every primary measure moved in the expected direction. Neutral early-down dropback rate — the share of pass plays on early downs in neutral game scripts — fell 1.8 points, from 54.0% to 52.1%. Completion rate fell 2.3 points with a tight interval (-3.4 to -1.1). Pass EPA per dropback dropped 0.067, turning a modestly efficient passing environment into a slightly negative one. Combined scoring fell 3.8 points per game.

The pattern is visible across wind bins as well: as reported wind increases, dropback share and pass efficiency per dropback both trend downward, with the 20+ mph bin based on only 31 games and therefore too sparse to lean on.

What does not change

One thing wind did not clearly move was average target depth. In an unregistered exploratory check, the difference at the 15 mph threshold was not supported. So the story is not that offenses suddenly throw everything short — it is that they throw less often, less accurately, and less productively.

Why this matters for fantasy decisions

A 3.8-point drop in combined scoring and a 2.3-point drop in completion rate is a real dent in a passing game's expected output, enough to matter when you are choosing between two similar receivers or a quarterback in a projected windy outdoor game. But treat this as context, not a command: these are game-level averages across 1,323 games, not a guarantee about any single player or matchup. A wind-heavy game script historically leaned slightly more run-heavy and less efficient through the air.

Where the evidence stops

Two limits are worth keeping in mind. First, only 31 games reached 20+ mph, so the extreme-wind estimate is underpowered and should not be used as a standalone threshold. Second, these are retrospective associations from observed game conditions — they do not establish a causal effect and do not prove that a pregame forecast improves projections. Weather coverage was also incomplete for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, which limits how representative the complete-case sample is for those years.

Wind at 15 mph or higher historically came with less passing volume, worse accuracy, lower efficiency, and fewer points in outdoor NFL games. Use it as one input when weighing a windy matchup — not as a forecast tool, and not as a reason to bench a clear advantage on its own.

At what reported wind speeds do NFL passing volume, completion rate, efficiency, and scoring change enough to matter for fantasy football?

  • Population: NFL regular-season games at venues recorded as outdoors or open, with reported wind and temperature, 2018–2025.
  • Design: preregistered threshold comparison (15+ mph vs. below 10 mph) plus temperature-, week-, and season-adjusted continuous estimates per 5 mph.
  • Uncertainty: 4,000-draw game-level bootstrap and HC3 robust OLS intervals; Holm-adjusted p-values across the four primary outcomes.
  • Sensitivity: registered 10 and 20 mph thresholds, a piecewise-linear spline, and leave-one-season-out direction stability checks.
  • Limitations: observed conditions only — no causal or forecast claim; 20+ mph sample is underpowered (31 games); 2022–2023 weather coverage is incomplete.
