Every fantasy manager has asked it: does weather matter this week? The honest answer starts with a rule about time. What a stadium actually experienced during a game is wonderful evidence for studying history — and completely useless as a pregame projection input, because nobody knew it at kickoff. Fourth Down Labs splits NFL weather into two layers that never mix, and that split is what makes any weather claim defensible.

The first layer is observed weather: station readings tied to the stadium and game window. It now covers 1,258 NFL games through 2024, with 98.1% usable coverage across released seasons. That's a deep, clean record for historical research — how wind, rain, and cold correlated with offense in past games. But every one of those readings exists only after the game ended. The moment you feed a postgame observation into a pregame projection, you've leaked the answer into the question. So the layer is marked prediction-ineligible, permanently.

The second layer is built for prediction. Archived forecasts are frozen at registered cutoffs — 24 hours and 6 hours before kickoff — and every retained record must prove its source was available before that cutoff. If a forecast snapshot can't demonstrate it existed when a real manager could have seen it, it doesn't survive. This is the only weather evidence allowed to apply as a challenger to the official projection model.

The challenger itself is still early. At this article run, 184 of 2,516 registered archived forecast requests were complete — a small fraction of the archive the evaluation needs. Until forecast-readiness and held-out performance gates all pass, weather does not affect the official rankings at all. A withheld challenger is not a production feature; it's a hypothesis waiting for enough cutoff-safe evidence to be tested fairly.

Fairly means the same test for everyone. If weather ever earns a place in the projections, it will be because the challenger passed the same held-out evaluation the official model faces — not because a memorable blizzard game made a compelling anecdote. The official projection stays unchanged until every promotion gate passes.

One lag is worth naming: the football inputs run through the 2025 season, while the observed-weather layer currently extends through 2024 and is retried automatically on refresh. Weather-dependent studies simply stop at the latest available season rather than stretching past their evidence.

For your draft, waiver, or lineup decision, the takeaway is about where the evidence stops. Historical weather research can tell you what rain and wind have done to past offenses. It cannot tell you what this Sunday's forecast is worth in your lineup — not until the cutoff-safe forecast archive is complete and a weather challenger survives the same held-out evaluation as the official model. Until then, treat any weather-adjusted projection you see elsewhere with the skepticism that a missing timestamp deserves.
